Thirty-four matches ago, RB Leipzig began their Bundesliga adventure, and not many during that match at Hoffenheim would have thought the league debutants would in fact go onto finish second.

The promoted side left it late at the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena as Marcel Sabitzer’s 90th-minute goal secured Leipzig’s maiden Bundesliga point, but it was club captain Dominik Kaiser who wrote his name into the club’s Bundesliga record books as he scored Leipzig’s first-ever goal at the high table of German football.

“It’s a dream come true,” Kaiser said after his club’s Bundesliga debut, where Leipzig made a strong impression from the very-first minute.

The draw against the team that went on to finish fourth was the kick-start of an extraordinarily successful campaign for the promoted side. Following victories over Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen, Leipzig crowned their maiden season with a sensational second-place finish behind champions Bayern Munich.

Kaiser has played a special role in the history of RBL. Joining the club in 2012, the midfielder is Leipzig’s longest-serving outfield player and has been with the side from the fourth tier to the top, as well as scoring in all four divisions along the way.
