There was a welcome sight on the Borussia Dortmund training pitch as the squad gathered for their first session under new head coach Peter Bosz today: Mario Götze was back.

In March earlier this year, the 25-year-old was ruled out for an indefinite period after being diagnosed with a metabolic disturbance, so the sight of the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner in full training gear was all the more welcome.

Götze, who confirmed his engagement to his long-term girlfriend over the summer, addressed his fans on Thursday in an emotional post on Instagram:

The attacker spent time in the USA in recent weeks undergoing further treatment and enjoying a holiday, but is now ready to return to Bundesliga action.

New faces for BVB

The club's first training session of the 2017/18 campaign also allowed fans to see new signings for the first time, with Ömer Toprak and Dan-Axel Zagadou being put through their paces.

Fellow newcomers Mahmoud Dahoud and Maxmillian Philipp are still on holiday after winning the U-21 European Championship with Germany, while Mikel Merino is likewise enjoying a break after his involvement with Spain’s U-21 team.

As well as the new faces, familiar stars were back and taking part, such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic. Returning from his loan at Cologne, Neven Subotic was also involved.

Dortmund will play their first friendly match of the summer against Rot-Weiss Essen on July 11, before travelling to Japan and China as part of the Bundesliga World Tour, playing Urawa Reds on July 15.
